Today the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Bartholomew, Apostle and martyr. He was one of the twelve chosen apostles of Jesus and according to the Gospels was also present at the Ascension of Jesus. He is believed to have preached the Gospel in Armenia. He was crowned with his glorious martyrdom in Albanopolis.
According to tradition he is believed to have been skinned alive and then crucified upside down. His sacred relics are kept in San Bartolomeo Basilica in Benevento, Italy. He is the patron saint of Armenia, Butchers, tanners and skin diseases.
