Feast day : 18 October
Today the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Luke, the Evangelist and author of the Gospel according Saint Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. He was a native of Antioch and a physician by profession. Additionally he is also known to have painted many beautiful pictures of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is only in the gospel according to Saint Luke that we get an account of the Annunciation of the Incarnation, the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Elizabeth, the detailed account of the birth of St. John the Baptist and many other parables that are not narrated in the other three gospels. He accompanied St. Paul during his travels for the work of his ministry and it was during the years of St. Paul’s imprisonment in Jerusalem that he wrote a detailed account of the growth of the early Church since the Ascension of the Lord which we today know as the Acts of the Apostles. After the death of Saint Paul, he is believed to have preached the gospel in Italy, Gaul, Macedon and Dalmatia. He is the patron saint of artists, physicians, surgeons, farmers and bachelors.
